“I enjoy networking, bringing ideas to people and assembling coalitions and partnerships. I enjoy the creativity that comes out of these groups of bright individuals working on common problems, identifying how each partner receives its own benefit from engaging with other partners in worthy activities.”

Organizational Mission: With commitment to the values of access, opportunity, student success, and excellence, the mission of Northern Virginia Community College is to deliver world-class in-person and online post-secondary teaching, learning, and workforce development to ensure our region and the Commonwealth of Virginia have an educated population and globally competitive workforce.

Interest in Sector Work: In the past 12 months, Career Builder reports 194,818 jobs posted in nine Northern Virginia municipalities served by NOVA. The largest number, 71,773 (37 percent), is within the SOC family for Computer Specialists (15-1000) -- more than six times the next classification. In the same period there were 9,516 job seekers with the required skills for these positions. There were qualified job seekers for only 13% of IT positions available.

The employment market supports NOVAís interest in an IT sector initiative. We know that IT positions of all levels provide a livable wage in our market, among the most expensive in the country. The community college is particularly interested because the field is now identifying and hiring individuals with specific skill sets, which may not require Bachelorís or even Associateís level education. There may be other approaches that meet the needs of employers better than traditional degree programs.
