“To me, sectoral initiatives should be at the heart of all workforce development programs and services. It allows us to be influencers, to help create a system that works for all (employers, job seekers, partners, and the community) rather than just responders.”

Organizational Mission: Goodwill Industries International enhances the dignity and quality of life of individuals, families, and communities by eliminating barriers to opportunity and helping people in need reach their fullest potential through the power of work.

Interest in Sector Work: Goodwill Industries® International, made up of 159 member organizations throughout North America, has long been a leader in workforce development. Goodwills services are designed to respond to the needs of their local communities, therefore, our services touch a variety of sectors from retail to healthcare, food service to construction. The sector selected for the Sector Skills Academy is an emerging one for both Goodwill and our economy at large – energy efficiency/renewable energy. In 2007, Goodwill started a Going Green initiative which focuses on ways to “green” is services and operations. After two years of researching and trying to understand so-called green jobs, we are now seeing legislation and funding that supports the growth of this sector. Therefore, this is a prime time to influence the sector’s inclusion in the workforce the diverse populations – including people with disadvantages, disabilities, who are homeless and veterans – that Goodwill serves.
